The WCSD Middle Schools and Board of Trustees have adopted the National Forum To Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform “Schools To Watch” criteria. Our mission and theirs is to create middle schools that are academically excellent, socially equitable and developmentally responsive.
School Highlights
Swope Middle School staff and students participated in a variety of school, district, state and national events and competitions. Our Commitment to Excellence continued as evidenced by:
• Swope Middle School was recognized by the WCSD for three years of continuous improvement in math, ELA, and science.
• Hyungki Park took first place in Nevada in the American Mathematics Contest.
• Benjamin Lokshin won the Grade 8 Regional Spelling Bee Championship; he took place 4th in state competition.
• Benjamin Lokshin took first place in Swope’s National Geographic Bee; he went on to place 4th in the state competition.
• Mrs. Mary Killian’s students entered the Scholastic Art Fair Competition; a sculpture by Tiana Wilt won national recognition.
• Music students performed in the Holiday Jubilee, Reno-Tahoe Airport Concerts, UNR Jazz Festival, and Reno Youth Orchestra.
• Sage Cunningham, Daniel Lyons, and Roshan Misra took 2nd place in the Future Cities Competition.
• Susan Alaei, Erin Brown-Silveira, and Brita Gonyou were regional finalists in Destination Imagination.
• Sarah Tilzey, Alastair Moody, Nicholas Pappas, and Sage Cunningham won local and state patriotic essay contests.
• Nearly 50 students joined and participated in R.E.S.P.E.C.T., Swope Middle School’s community service organization.
• Approximately 90% of Swope’s Foreign Language students passed the Credit by Exam.
