School Highlights
Lois Allen is a school of excellence committed to the continued growth and achievement of every child. Lois Allen is located in Sparks, Nevada. The community we serve consists of a multicultural population with many children living in households that fall below the poverty level. We utilize research based proven effective reading and math programs to provide high quality instruction to all children. Currently we are utilizing the adopted Washoe County School District Houghton-Mifflin reading series together with Success for All reading. All students are homogenously grouped for a two-hour literacy block with additional classroom time devoted to literacy instruction.
In order to reach AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), all students are involved with daily intervention that is focused on the individual need of each student. If students are in the bottom 5% of their grade level they work with a highly qualified paraprofessional one-on-one for twenty minutes every day. These students receive intense daily instruction to work on gaps in understanding and measure their response to intervention. These same students also receive an additional thirty minutes of intervention time each day with a certified teacher. All students not scoring in the meeting or exceeding category on high-stake assessments as well as formative assessments also receive thirty minutes of small group instruction focused on their area of need with a certified teacher. Students identified as being close to demonstrating proficiency attend our after school-tutoring program, Team-Up, 21st Century. Approximately 450 students benefit from these programs yearly. Our staff is focused on the goal of increased student achievement and is participating in many professional development activities. We hold weekly PLC (Professional Learning Community) meetings. We have also adopted GLAD and SIOP and are using these proven-effective strategies throughout the entire instructional day.
Lois Allen encourages all students, staff and community to continually abide by our personal standards: be respectful, be a problem solver, and make good decisions.
