View/Edit Details Goal Strengths/Progress Concerns What needs to be adjusted or done differently in order to accomplish the stated goal?
1. Reading — All students at Mariposa will increase their language skills, with attention to increased reading proficiency, including students in targeted disaggregated populations of Hispanic, LEP, and FRL. Bi-Annual Review - End of the Year diagnostics of EDL/DRA reading assessments and AimsWeb Benchmarks were administered and analyzed which revealed an overall 20% growth in reading from the beginning of the year. The 1st grade ELPA scores also revealed growth among students of 61 points to 203 points. 13 students from grades 3rd-5th achieved proficiency on the ELPA, exiting from the ESL criteria. The issue of time continues to be a factor when administering diagnostic fluency testing without taking away from formal instruction during the months of September, January and May. Also, the 09-10 CRT Reading scores revealed an overall drop in proficiency from 45% to 34% among 3rd-5th grade students. It can be determinded that 5th grade students were not as prepared to answer the Level-3 Depth of Knowledge questions; since only 3 of 24 students passed the reading. Further, the AMO for AYP changed from 51.7% to 63.8%, a 12.1% increase. For the 2010-11 school year, grades 3-5 will be exposed to Depth of Knowledge Level 3 questions from the beginning of the school year to strenghten this skill and build reading stamina for CRT Testing. Further, workshops aimed at expository writing, math constructive response, DOK-Level 3, and Science strands will be the focus of inclass workshops, Saturday classes and afterschool tutoring.
2. Math — All students at Mariposa will demonstrate increased math proficiency, including students in targeted subpopulations of Hispanic, LEP, and FRL. Bi-Annual Review - Students identified as not proficient in math were refered for afterschool tutoring and homework club. Accelerated Math was added as a supplement to Harcourt Math in grades 3rd -5th to strenghten math skills. CRT Math proficiency increased in 4th grade from 41% to 56.5% and for 5th an increase from 47% to 50%. Although daily Accelerated Math print-outs proved to improve student math scores in 4th and 5th grade, great amounts of copy paper was consumed for daily print-outs. For the 2010-11 year, daily print-outs will need to be modified due to a reduction of funding for copy paper. The 09-10 CRT Math scores revealed a drop in proficiency in 3rd grade from 52% to 30%. Also, the AMO in Math changed from 54.6% to 65.9%, an 11.3% increase. For the 2010-11 school year, grades 3-5 will be exposed to Depth of Knowledge Level 3 questions from the beginning of the school year and up to CRT Testing to better prepare them for testing. The tools to assist with this goal is to align grade level expectations with indicators to DOK on the 3rd - 5th grade Curriculum Mapping. Furthermore, workshops aimed at expository writing, math constructive response, DOK, and Science strands will be the focus of Saturday classes and afterschool tutoring.
3. Writing — All students will increase their writing proficiency. Bi-Annual Review - During the 10 scheduled early release days teachers collaborated in grade level teams and developed Grade Level-Set of Expectations for all core subjects and created a Holistic 6-Trait Rubric for grades K-2nd. The Rubric was also integrated in the instruction/scoring of primary student writing. A four-day Writers Workshop in December exposed 3rd-5th grade students to NDE's 4-Traits of Writing to boost writing stamina and proficiency. Last year's writing proficiency increased from 5.6% to 53% proficient. This 2009-2010 year, proficiency in writing decreased to 24%. The Grade Level Set of Expectations will be revisited at the beginning of the year in order to refine the grade level expectations for all core subjects; particularly for writing to ensure 5th grade students are capable of revising drafts and editing for mechanics, word usage and sentence structure. Monthly writing prompts will become a consistent practice from Kinder-5th with monthly scoring to monitor progress using the Holistic Rubric for grades K-2nd and NDE's 4-Traits for grades 3rd-5th.
